The classes that I run that are suitable for people with osteoporosis, osteopenia or low bone density are as follows:
Groombridge Village Hall - Tuesdays 9.30am and 10.45am
Forest Row Community Centre – Tuesdays 2pm
Marden Memorial Hall - Mondays & Thursdays 10.45am
Nettlestead Village Hall – Thursdays 2pm
If you have other injuries or medical conditions in addition to osteoporosis, for example arthritis or low back pain, these can be accommodated within the class. Balance work is included at the end of every class to help reduce the chances of falling over (and breaking a bone). The classes focus on exercises to strengthen the bones, improve co-ordination and body awareness, and increase movement confidence.
If you are unable to get onto and up from the floor, the exercises can be adapted for you. You may find in time, that you develop the strength and confidence to be able to exercise on the floor.
These classes are particularly suitable for people who are recovering from hip or knee replacements, once you have had clearance from your surgeon or physiotherapist to begin gentle exercising, of course. These classes can also be used to help prepare your body for hip or knee replacements.
To find out more about osteoporosis and the lifestyle changes you can make to prevent or manage it, please take a look at the National Osteoporosis Society website.
